As expected the bottom 4 results are all consistently around the max speed. The top 4 results (11:00 am) are a wired passthrough connection via the AirPort Extreme to my Mac. The bottom 4 results (10:xx am) are a direct wired passthrough connection from the modem to my Mac. In all the forums I've come across, everyone references the SmallNetBuider review claiming a max throughput between 300 - 400 Mbps in router mode or 500 - 600 Mbps in bridge mode.Īttached are my Speedtest results using 4 different servers: 2 IPv4 and 2 IPv6. All copper connections are via at least Gigabit Ethernet ports and Cat 6 terminations. My reasoning for sticking with this ancient gear is that it works and I understand it so in the few-and-far-between times that it doesn't work, the AirPort Utility and its ever-present approachability is there for me in a way I can remember and/or intuit quickly and without needing to find a manual, a forum, or vendor tech support. My inclination is to customize as little as possible while milking every bit of bandwidth out of my ancient gear. No apparent speed change (still between 315-333Mbps down, 25Mbps up). Spoiler: I tried it - specifically checking the 5GHz box in the 3 AirPort Extremes that are creating their own networks then restarting the whole system, including the modem. I recently had to replace the mothership device with a new-to-me unit ('mothership II', eBay, $44!) and now I am wondering about whether creating and selecting discrete 5GHz networks could help my WiFi speed, and if yes is there anything else I have to do to see improvement?

There is another AirPort Extreme in the house that is set to 'extend' the network wirelessly (I wanted to ethernet it in but can't get a cable to that room, darn it). Two other AirPort Extremes are Bridged to the mothership via Ethernet and set to create their own networks of same name and credentials. My cable internet comes in through a Motorola MB7621 modem and is router'ed into the house by a latest generation AirPort Extreme ('mothership'). Might using 5GHz lanes help get more WiFi speed? I am paying for "Fios Home Internet: 200 Mbps" and only getting at best 10 Mbps (upload and download) most of the time and often only 4 Mbps. I am getting internet through he AE and both Airport Express. No indication that anything has happened to damage the AE or either of the two Airport Express. Note 2: I did this exact setup with a Comcast compatibly cable modem at my previous home and it worked flawlessly. I have also linked two Airport Express to the AE to extend + improve the wifi coverage in the house and onto the porches. I spoke with Verizon before we moved into the house and they confirmed that I did not need to use one of their routers and that I could simply plug in the AirPort Extreme (AE) I already own and have internet (though they recommend using one of their devices and they would not help troubleshoot my AE). Ethernet cable looks to be fine (not compromised). Note 1: The Fios connection box with the ethernet cable coming out of it is in the basement and the ethernet runs up to a closet on the first floor where the previous owners had the Verizon wifi router. We just moved into a new home in RVA that had Fios.
